Javon Jackson - tenor saxophone, Joe Magnarelli – trumpet, Melvin Sparks – guitar, Leon Spencer – Hammond B3 organ, Neil Clarke – conga drums, Alvin Queen – drums
In his previous appearance at Jazz Standard, back in March 2008, Alvin Queen showed us that, like Art Blakey and Cannonball Adderley, he is among that elite group of jazz players who personify the most joyfully swinging qualities of Our Music. The drummer made his first recording date at age 12 (un¬released sides with trumpeter Joe Newman and pianist Hank Jones), replaced Billy Cobham in the Horace Silver band at age 19, and went to tour and/or record with veritable Who’s Who of jazz names: George Benson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and the late great Oscar Peterson among them. For this return engagement, Alvin’s sextet will include not one but two jazz–funk legends: guitarist Melvin Sparks and organist Leon Spencer, both of whom laid down some deep grooves for Prestige Records in the 1970s. - The Jazz Standard
