For those of us who were avid watchers, for those of us who can remember, even for those of us who were not born yet, New York's PBS channel 13 (WNET-TV) had it's soul version of The Ed Sullivan Show. It was aptly named "SOUL" with legendary host Ellis Haizlip and (radio personality) Jerry Bledsoe. A vast number of artists, whose names became revered through the generations to follow, passed through this porthole. Please, do yourself educational justice and view the link below. If you didn't know, now you know!

Heads Up! Anybody here know a guy by the name of STEVIE RAY VAUGHN? Just another example of the visual side of music. In this video, "Little Wing" Vaughn exhibits total command of his instrument and maneuvers the feedback with ease. Enjoy.

Excuse me everyone, sometimes I'll see a video that takes me back. My band members used to listen to MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA (Billy Cobham in particular) just prior to our performing in order to get the creative juices flowing (sort of like fighters and Bruce Lee, I guess). Oh well, maybe some of you might understand. Anyway this one, MAHAVISHNU ORCESTRA: "One Word", is just for fun.

By now, I think you may be understanding the message we're trying to get across here at ON THE VISUAL SIDE. We are all about eye and ear "candy", and MAKIN' MUSIC NETWORK is the virtual candystore. In the video below, Jean Luc Ponty's "Enigmatic Ocean", the pace doesn't ease up. MMN family member, THIERRY ARPINO, gives us a taste of his strength and versatility as a world class drummer. There's no wondering why Mr. Ponty has been stocking up on Thierry's talent for over 9 years! See for yourself.

March is not known as the month to commemorate bass players, but I"ve been wanting to bring this phenom to your attention for quite a while. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of befriending contrabassist MORRIE LOUDEN on your page, do yourself a favor and become aware of his existence here at the MAKIN' MUSIC NETWORK. Morrie exemplifies the whole idea of what ON THE VISUAL SIDE is all about:

"Where sight meets sound and how the images of musical artists and performances are captured and expressed by visual artists."

He brings what is usually the background to the fore as his fingers dance across the strings of his 300 year old Pietro Rogeri contrabass. Take a look at the video posted below and tell me if you agree that it's difficult to take your eyes off his lightning fast pizzicatos!

Say Hey Leon....IT"S 'BOUT TIME JAZZ got i'ts due....what a great tour de force MS Spalding is...as well as many many other "cats" in the field...the artists of JAZZ have provided the music industry with so many innovations and so many deep and talented artists to help all the other genre's of the music industry....it's 'bout time...

I thank you on behalf of Ms. Spalding and due to her absence from this venue, I will humbly accept any and all awards to be forthcoming due to her magnificent performances (I wish!). But in all seriousness, Esperanza Spalding is on her way to becoming, in an amazingly short time span, one of the uniquely dynamic forces of the jazz world. Believe it or not, the bass wasn't her first choice of instrument. She played classical cello and just happened to try the upright bass out of curiousity. Fast forward to the present, Esperanza Spalding has become the first in the field of jazz to win a Grammy for Best New Artist. Her name is going viral and her music is destined to cross over several genres. She is definitely a booster shot for the industry. Hopefully in the near future her image will become iconic and the ability to play an instrument will once again become the ambition of our youths across the nation.
