"Melvin Davis has been the man to call to fill any organ or keyboard gig in the greater N.Y. area. He has appeared on some of my recordings with a characteristic sound that is all his own. My friend is a powerful musician who deserves his place in the sun". - George Benson
Melvin L. Davis is an accomplished musician. He has worked with such notables as Grammy Winner, George Benson, Grammy Nominated Ronny Jordan and the Prince of Harlem, Lonnie Youngblood.
Melvin was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. . Melvin played his first piano recital at the age of 9 and by 15 Melvin was sneaking himself into local night clubs to play the Hammond B-3. He became fascinated with Jimmy McGriff, Alvin Valentine and Larry Young, Jr. and he has since worked with such notables as Grammy Winner, George Benson, Grammy Nominated Ronny Jordan and the Prince of Harlem, Lonnie Youngblood.
During the 1998 and 1999 Newark Jazz Festival organ jams, Melvin headlined with George Benson, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, Rhoda Scott and Seleno Clark with guest appearance by Lonnie Youngblood.
Melvin contributed his organ and keyboard skills to the After 8 recording by Ronny Jordan in 2004.
He applied his writing, arranging and keyboard genius to the hit Got To Be There, from the album Love Remembers. Melvin also played on Benson’s hit albums, Standing Together and the Other Side of Abbey Road.
In 2007, Melvin captivated audiences as accompaniment to the renowned Ronny Jordan playing organ during their European tour.
Mel is recognized as one of the best Hammond B-3 players in the world. Did we mention that Melvin sings? Today, Mel plays with his long time trio-mates -- guitarist Mark Bowers and drummer G. Earl Grice. This trio treats their audiences to swinging and smooth jazz, R&B, blues, and funk with vocals by Mel & guitarist Mark Bowers.
